Periodontology

Periodontal treatment is the foundation of the home in the complete rehabilitation of the oral cavity in modern dental medicine. It includes a series of maneuvers, such as the most important, periodontal curettage, but in Sanadent clinic another maneuver is equally important: explaining the patient about everything that this disease means and healing or stopping it.

The main causes of periodontal disease (periodontitis):

Periodontal disease is the direct result of the action of the dental plaque that accumulates on the surface of the teeth, especially near the gingival edge.

Dental Plaque or Bacterial Plaque is a whitish and sticky deposit that appears on the teeth surface after each meal. It is a network of bacteria and food debris and is the main cause of periodontal disease and tooth decay. If it persists for longer, it calcifies, turning into dental tartar .

If the dental plaque is not removed efficiently after each meal, the bacteria that form the plaque (which may be favored by other risk factors ) will cause (periodically) the appearance of periodontal disease. Risk factors include certain anatomical abnormalities of marginal periodontitis, an overly aggressive immune response, genetic disorders, smoking, etc. Although these risk factors play an important role in the production and progression of periodontal disease, it is widely accepted that without the bacterial plaque the periodontal disease can not occur.

Periodontal disease can affect one or more structures of the marginal periodontium: gum, dental cement, alveolar bone, periodontal ligaments.

The marginal periodontium

Periodontal disease has a progressive character.

In the first stage, periodontal disease will affect the superficial structure of the marginal periodontium: the gum. Bacteria in the dental plaque will cause an inflammatory condition of the gum called gingivitis.

In the absence of treatment, periodontal disease will progress to the profound structures of the marginal periodontium: the periodontal ligaments and the alveolar bone. The disorder is extremely destructive, producing progressive bone resorption and periodontal ligament dissolution.

Popularly, this disease is called paradonto. If not treated, it will gradually cause dental mobility , and in the final stages due to the loss of bone tissue that supports it, the teeth will become impossible to save.

All periodontal diseases are caused by bacteria in the dental plaque. In the absence of bacteria, periodontal disease does not occur.

Proper oral hygiene can prevent the onset of periodontal disease or progression to more serious forms.

Periodontal diseases are inflammatory diseases that can be divided into two categories:

  • Gingivitis: is a non-destructive inflammatory disorder of the superficial structure of the marginal periodontium (gingiva)

  • Deep marginal periodontitis or Paradonto: is the destructive disorder of the deep structures of the marginal periodontium (periodontal ligaments and alveolar bone)

Periodontal disease has a progressive character, always being preceded by gingivitis.
